A few years ago, coach Dan Hawkins started blogging for CUBuffs.com. It wasn’t a traditional blog really. Not a lot of entries, but enough from a busy head coach to be interesting and keep readers coming back, even if most of his offerings were motivational speaking rather than true insight into his program. I thought it was a great idea at the time and still do if it’s done right.
Somewhere along the way, Hawkins must have decided blogging isn’t for him. We’re approaching the year anniversary of his last post. It’s hardly a blog if you’re going a year between posts. Heck, the first explorers in North America corresponded with the old world in less time.
At media days in Dallas last week, I asked Hawkins why he abandoned his blog. He just sort of shrugged and said he was focusing on other things. Sports information director Dave Plati said he has been trying to get Hawkins to get back on the blogging wagon.
I hope he does, but if not, then it probably ought to be taken off the site. I mean, what message are you really sending at this point by leaving up the same old stale post? If a recruit visited the site in, say, October, and he comes back today 10 months later to the same thing, what does that tell that recruit about the program? This was important two years ago. Why is it not now?
I’m just offering a suggestion here, not trying to be harsh or anything. Trust me, I know Hawkins has about 11,973 things on his list that are more important than tending to his blog. Here is another suggestion. Hawkins has taken up Twitter in recent months. Someone should link the Twitter to the blog. So everything that goes on one also feeds the other.
Camp starts in two days. Seems like the perfect time to start.
